Lamentation 1:1-22 is about the grief and the sorrows of Jerusalem – The fall of Jerusalem into the hands of their enemies.
God wanted the people to worship only him but instead they disobeyed God. He let their enemies from other nation capture them. The enemies destroyed Jerusalem and its people were taken as slaves. they were in captive
For me, the book of lamentation is all about having hope in our daily living as we go about our lives. It shows us that no matter how deep our grief, sorrow or our sins are, God still wants to have a relationship with us. He calls us his own.
In verse 8 of Lamentation1 it says: Jerusalem has sinned greatly, so she has been tossed away like a filthy rag. All who once honoured her now despise her, for they have seen her stripped naked and humiliated. All she can do is groan and hide her face.
Maybe today you are giving up because of what you are going through. lost hope, life has turned upside down, things are not working as they should and you are stuck. You have been searching for answers and its like no one hears you, you feel you are just alone.
Jerusalem lost hope because they sinned against God.
Romans 3: 23 – 25 says For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past,
Now how do we/ I apply this?
Lamentations reminds us of the importance not only of mourning over grief, sorrow or our sins, but also a reminder that we can come before the cross and ask the Lord for His forgiveness when we fail Him so badly so as we come to this special week let focus on what God has done at the cross.
Do you see any like that destroyed city in your own life, in your relationships with other people, in your marriage? Are you mourning over the sin that’s brought you to this point?
Do you feel overrun by these burdens, they overpower you; are you in need of hope from the Lord? When we bring our grief, sorrow, sins or whatever is hindering us from experience his love and forgiveness at the cross, we will receive forgiveness. John 8:36 “so if the son sets you free, you are truly free”
